Ellis Island is in New York City and was open on December 17, 1900. In 1908, the baggage and Dormitory buildings were finished. At its peak Ellis Island was able to except over 11,000 immigrants a day. In 1924, the main function of Ellis Island was changed from a immigration hub to a detention center for prisoners of war. In 1976, Ellis Island became a national park and it still is today.
